Joan Foster

Joan Foster, a retired community college instructor from Springdale, NL, is a founding member and certified teacher of the Rug Hooking Guild of Newfoundland. She currently enjoys teaching geometrics, pictorials, natural dyeing and the Grenfell style of hooking. Joan has taught across Canada as well as at Sauder Village in Ohio. Her work has been exhibited in several displays, in Rug Hooking Magazine and others and is part of several collections. She has won awards including the Provincial Craft Council’s Award for Technical Excellence and also the Award for Preservation of a Traditional Craft Skill. Through her home-based business, Joan designs and sells patterns primarily featuring east coast scenery and takes orders for custom-designed rugs.
Lisa’s Note: No trip to Newfoundland would be complete without experiencing the Grenfell style of rug hooking. Joan’s diligent and determined stewardship of the history and tutelage of the method is a MUST for the traditional rug hooking purist!
